TRAVELOGUE

..entries from our travels

Bletchley Park

After spending a few days at Marks place we’re off across the country again toward the Cotswolds. One of the places we stopped at was the village of Sywell. There was an aerodrome where a Spitfire and a Mustang fly regularly. unfortunately they had finished for the summer and we didn’t get to see them, but we did see some Boing Stearmans complete with wing-walkers (nutters) they flew over our campsite on a very regular basis.

We went for a walk through the village and to the aerodrome and chatted with the lady whose husband was one of the pilots flying the wing-walkers. She has done it so many times she now finds it boring!!

Bletchley Park

As we were passing through Milton Keynes we just had to stop in at Bletchley park.

Bletchley Park was the centre of allied code-breaking in the second world war and at its peak nearly 9000 people worked there 75% were women. The place was top secret and in fact, operations there were classified up until the mid 1970’s. The work carried out here is said to have reduced the length of the war by up to 2 years.

We got to see the office of Alan Turing and see how he and many other very clever people helped win the war. A highlight was the mansion house which is still unchanged from that time. It was very funny hearing an American tourist say to her husband that “they had ruined a perfectly nice house”!!
