Canterbury
April 24, 2026
Today we visited Canterbury, home of Canterbury Cathedral the first Anglican church to be built in England. It was founded in 597 AD and is famous for being where the Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in 1170 and the destination of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. So much history here and a very beautiful city as well. Very easy to walk around and something interesting down every side road.

We visited the Cathedral and saw the spot where Becket was murdered and where the shrine was put in place for him before Heny VIII had it destroyed (he seems to have been everywhere)!

Very impressive building, but Baz still thinks it doesn’t rival Lincoln Cathedral 🙂

Thomas Becket was murdered here

We also visited The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge and saw there a display of toys from our childhood – strange feeling to see items you can relate to in a museum! there was Bagpuss, Basil Brush and the Clangers. They were all the invention of Peter Firmin and are the original puppets on display until 2030.

The weather is also good, we are now getting to sit outside in the sunshine having a beer after a long day of learning.
