Normandy Beaches – Day 4

Longues-sur-Mer

This morning we set off to look at the gun battery at Longues-sur-Mer. This gun battery consisted of four gun casements and formed part of the German Atlantic Wall defense system. Overlooking the beaches of Omaha to the West and Gold to the East.

This site came under fire from about 5:30 am and by about 8:45am it was out of action without ever hitting a single ship.

Gun destroyed by a direct hit from HMS Ajax on D-Day (arrow) from about 11km out to sea.

Also from this site we got a great view of the Mulberry harbour remains at Arromanches (was obscured by fog the other day.

Overlord Museum

About half a kilometre from the American Cemetery is the Overlord museum. There were lots of exhibits in fantastic displays. It was just too dark to take decent photos but it is a great exhibition of war time machinery, personal stories and displays of everyday items from that period.

Jumped out of my skin when this first happened!

Normandy American Cemetery

The scale of this place is overwhelming when you walk through. It’s over 172 acres and has 9,389 graves, its right next to the beach they fought so hard to breach.
