Rochefort-en-Terre & Saint Nazaire

On the way south out of Brittany we stopped into the village of Rochefort-en-Terre its a very picturesque village that is one of Frances “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France”

These villages are so perfect they don’t seem real, they are like something Walt Disney dreamed up to represent a real French village, but they are real and we are loving it.

Was just a brief visit on our way down to the area of Pays de Loire

We stopped at an Aire in the town of Guerande overnight. The temperatures are getting on the silly side though we got up to 32 degrees yesterday and that meant it was around 40 in the van!! a very popular site, it was fully booked out.

Leaving Guerande this morning on our way further down France. We are heading for a stopover night in a town called Aubigny-les-Clouzeaux.

On our way we passed through Saint-Nazaire.

Operation Chariot was a daring British commando raid during World War II on the heavily defended Normandie dry dock at St. Nazaire, France, on March 28, 1942. The goal was to destroy the dock to prevent the German battleship Tirpitz from using it for repairs, thereby keeping it from threatening Allied shipping in the Atlantic. The raid involved the Royal Navy and British Commandos, with the destroyer HMS Campbeltown packed with explosives ramming the dock gates. Despite heavy casualties, the mission was successful in putting the dock out of action for the rest of the war.

I couldn’t get to the dry dock as there was a cruise ship berthed there, but I did get to see the U-Boat pens.

This monstrous block of concrete could house up to 20 U-Boats
Think this was a submarine by accident..

Mandy wasn’t too sure about the Camping-Car park at Aubigny-les-Clouzeaux as it had no reviews and there were no photographs on the site. We took a chance thinking at the very worst we just move on. Turns out the reason for lack of reviews and photos is that it is a brand new site they are still finishing it – we are the only ones here at the moment. Might have builders wake us up early tomorrow but all good for one night.
